Definition - Electron microscope in which the beam of electrons passes through the specimen to provide an image of the area under study. Transmission electron microscopes (TEM) allow highly detailed (e.g., 500,000x magnification) visualization of tissue, individual cells, and cell structures. TEMs are commonly used in identifying types of cancer cells and in diagnosing and differentiating types of renal diseases. (UMD)
